Kingi Smiler – Chairman and Executive Director
Kingi is a Chartered Accountant CA, BCA and has a wealth of international business experience including eight years in Toronto working in the business planning and corporate restructuring fields with Ernst & Young, with whom he was a Partner from 1990 – 1997.
His past directorships include the NZ Wool Board; Wool Research Organisation of NZ; Chairman of the Audit Committee of both these organisations; Wools of NZ Ltd; Canesis Research Company; Keratec Research Company and Chairman of Whaiora Whanui Trust.
His current directorships include; Chairman Wairarapa Moana Incorporation, Chairman of QVST Property Company Limited and Trustee of the Crown Forestry Rental Trust, Chairman of the Tairawhiti Land Development Trust, Chairman of Federation of Maori Authorities Dairy Company and Director of Wellington Rugby Union. Kingi was appointed the Chair of Wairarapa Moana Incorporation in 2000.
Ron Mark – Deputy Chairman
At the age of 16 he joined the NZ Army and in the next 15 years he rose from a private, through the ranks to Captain. Ron spent 13 months from 1982-1983 peacekeeping in Israel and Egypt. He left the New Zealand Army in 1985 and spent five years soldiering in the Sultanate of Oman. There he served in the Sultans Land Forces and the Sultans Special Force. He retired as a Major in 1990.
Previous governance roles include Daytona Park 1990 Limited and Paparua Maori Charitable Trust.
Ron Mark was elected to Parliament in 1996 and is a New Zealand First list MP. Major Portfolios: Law and Order, Defence, Corrections, Mental Health, Civil Defence, Disarmament and Arms Control, Youth Affairs, Veterans' Affairs, Sport and Recreation. Select Committee: Law and Order Deputy Chairperson.
Arawhetu Gray- Director
Arawhetu Gray’s experience within the public sector has mostly been in health, with periods in the Special Education Service, Department of Social Welfare and Ministry of Women's Affairs. Most recently she was the Manager, Maori Mental Health at the Ministry of Health.
Previous governance roles include Te Rau Puawai, Te Roopu Tautoko Trust, Te Puawai Tapu, Papawai Marae Committee, Wellington Ethics Committee, Social and Economic Determinance of Health and Diseases, and Research and Development for Mental Health.
Arawhetu has a Bachelor of Arts Sociology.
Mark Rutene - Director
At the age of eighteen Mark left school and followed his father and uncles into the freezing works at Waingawa until its closure. After various jobs, Mark joined the ANZ bank and now has over twenty years of banking experience including the last thirteen years as a Rural Manager, with both ANZ and National Banks in Wairarapa. Mark manages a diverse portfolio with a mix of dairy, sheep and beef, cropping and deer. He currently works for the National Bank in Masterton.
Mark has been a past judge and committee member for the Balance Farm Environment Awards, Treasurer for Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Wairarapa and is currently a trustee to the Te Whiti South Trust. He has an active interest in the local Wairarapa-Bush Rugby scene, where he has coached at various representative levels. He is currenlty completing the NZRFU Advanced Coaches Course.
Mark has a diploma of Agribusiness Management and is studying for his Rural Valuation Certification.
Te Horipo Karaitiana - Director
Te Horipo Karaitiana (Ngati Kuhungunu, Kurakura Kai Tahu, Kati Mamoe, Waitaha, Rapuwai, Hawea) is a Director on Wairarapa Moana Incorporation and has been in this role for 7 years.
Te Horipo has a diverse background, early in his career he spent time with his father and uncles in the South Island High Country as a Blade Shearer, and in the remote southern Titi Islands catching the prized delicacy. These activities were complemented with more seasonal work in the now closed Kaiapoi Freezing Works north of Christchurch.
In addition to this, over the past 20 years, Te Horipo has taken on a wide range of senior management and governance roles for Maori, Community, Private and Government sectors. He has a strong commercial background and holds an MBA, a post-graduate Diploma in Corporate Management and is a member of the Institute of Directors and has completed both the Company Directors and Chairing the Board courses.
He is also privileged to be selected for the prestigious Food and Agribusiness Market Experience (FAME) programme offering emerging leaders in the food and agribusiness sectors a unique professional development opportunity in a course offered jointly by three leading New Zealand Universities: Otago, Lincoln and Massey.
Te Rangi Samuels - Co-opted
Te Rangi spent intermittent periods between 1947 and 1964 working on both sheep and beef and dairy farms, milking, as a shepherd and a general farm labourer.
Previous governance roles include Chairman Kereru Marae, Te Kohanga Reo o Kereru Marae, Kokiri Development, Wairarapa Moana Trust and Raukawa Safety Council.
He is a part time tutor and full time student at Te Whare Wananga o Raukawa, undertaking a Bachelor of Business and Administration.
