Wairarapa Moana Trust Distributing to the shareholders, beneficiaries and their descendants the benefits accrued...
The Wairarapa Moana Trust was established in 1987 incorporated as a charitable trust under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957. It was established by the Pou-a-Kani II Trust and the Mangakino Township Incorporation, as a vehicle to provide for the social, educational and cultural development of their respective beneficiaries and shareholders.
While the former objects of the Trust attend heavily to employment, training and job creation the pre-dominant focus has been upon the provision of education grants and Marae development.
The Wairarapa Moana Trust was formed to distribute to the shareholders, beneficiaries and their descendants the benefits accrued from the commercial activities of the Pou-a-Kani II Trust and the Mangakino Township Incorporation.
Purpose and Approach
One hundred and sixty seven years ago the nation of New Zealand was constituted with the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. One hundred and eleven years ago the relationship between the Crown and Wairarapa Maori was cemented by the gifting of Lake Wairarapa to the Crown.
The vision and dreams of our tipuna include the expectations that their descendants would forever remain: - Masters of their own destinies;
- Embedded in their own language, histories and traditions;
- Located securely upon their lands with their own resources;
- Able to provide for their own livelihood, growth and development;
- A healthy, strong and dignified people;
- A vital and growing population;
- Able to benefit from the opportunities provided by European settlement;
- Able to determine and control the negative and positive influences brought about by European settlement;
- Free from struggle, prejudice and inequity;
- Able to live in peace and free from conflict;
- Able to access all the rights, protections and opportunities available to non-Maori.
Many of the dreams and expectations of our tipuna remain as relevant today as they were in former times.
